A few days ago whilst watching a documentary a turn of phrase about a response to an event struck a chord, I realised that although the documentary was about a sniper walking into an ambush and the action he took, the action (minus the pistol’s) is what I instil in my learners. Furthermore although the phrase was never uttered during my training for and whilst carrying out dynamic interventions on armed prisoner’s it was exactly what we did.
The phrase mentioned is ‘Violence of Action’ which basically means ‘Gaining and Maintaining the Physical and Psychological Momentum’, in Self Defence and Personal Safety it is essential that when attacked we put the attacker on the ‘back foot’ and make them change from an attacking mindset to one of defence and keep them there metaphorically speaking until we can escape.
This is achieved by lawful use of force that is overpowering, targeted, fast and sustained until the threat has reduced to the level that you can affect an escape. We then get out of dodge.
Having researched ‘Violence of Action’ it is part of the motto of the 75th Ranger Regiment, make it part of yours!
Stay Safe folks,
